National “Dear World” Campaign
In 2008, more than 275 girls from Girls Inc. centers across the United States and Canada lent their voices, wrote letters to the world, and auditioned to take part in the Girls Inc. Dear World public education campaign. Though each girl spoke of her unique loves, hates, goals, and fears, the message was undeniable: girls love being themselves, but they need all the support and empowerment the world can offer.

For participation in the Dear World Public Service Announcement (PSA), girls all over the country auditioned, and 42 Girls Inc. girls were chosen, from affiliates in California, Florida, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Texas, and Ontario, Canada. After thousands of hours of research, planning, concepting, and casting, PSAs were shot in Los Angeles, California, by a dedicated crew from our pro-bono agency partners, zig USA and Ruckus Films. Director Wendy Morgan demonstrated great care, respect, and commitment to girls’ voices. The PSA was launched on August 5, 2008.

Watch the PSA and be inspired by the celebration of girlhood.

Unity Week
Girls Inc. of NYC, the Children’s Aid Society Carrera Program, and the Urban Assembly Institute of Math & Science for Young Women (UAI) hosted Unity Week March 19 – 27, 2009

Unity Week was an exciting series of school-wide activities dedicated to promoting respect for all people and appreciating diversity at UAI.  With an exciting kickoff that included live Caribbean Music, the week’s activities included days called:

  • Respecting Yourself
Councilwoman Letitia James, a strong, smart and bold woman and role model for young girls of color, inspired girls to defy gender and racial stereotypes and live up to their potential.
  • Respecting Others
Students participated in activities that focused on combating bullying and creating anti-bullying messages.
  • Celebrating Diversity
Guest speakers from the Gay Center NYC, Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays, and Project Sol talked about their personal experiences and the importance of respecting and celebrating all youth.
  • Mix-It-Up at Lunch
The girls experienced what it’s like to see life from other perspectives by talking with people outside of their regular group of friends.

She Votes Mock Election
One of the strongest indicators that an individual will vote as an adult is exposure to the polls as a child.  The Girls Inc. She Votes Initiative took girls inside the voting process by staging a mock election of actual 2008 candidates. Knowing the value of hands-on learning, Girls Inc. affiliates across the country—including New York City—set up polls in their centers and hosted an election on October 21, 2008. Some 200 of our girls participated, and it was a great success!

“What’s Your Point, Honey?”
To benefit our programs, in October 2007 Girls Inc. of New York City screened “What’s Your Point, Honey?” a fascinating documentary about women in politics, featuring seven women to watch as contenders for President of the United States. Producers/writers of “Mad Hot Ballroom” Amy Sewell and Susan Toffler were on hand to present their documentary, which takes a fresh look at political leadership while revealing inequalities that women continue to experience. Special thanks to CosmoGirl Editor-In-Chief Susan Schulz for hosting the event and speaking with the girls about the importance of supporting the involvement of young women in politics.

Girls Explore Finance with UBS
During the 2008 school year, the All Bar None women’s network at UBS sponsored, for the second year, a landmark Girls Inc. of New York City program—one that makes our Economic Literacy program really come alive—in the financial capital of the world. The girls took trips to the stock exchange and the “back office” to see the nuts and bolts of financial institutions and how they work. Senior UBS women mentored girls from Girls Inc. of New York City sites, sharing their own backgrounds and experiences and making economic literacy a reality in girls’ lives.

Alpha Girls
Girls Inc. of NYC is among the few organizations chosen to participate in the grant projec t“Alpha Girls – Pay It Forward,” and two of our girls won grants! The Alpha Girls project is a remarkable opportunity for girls to take action to improve their communities with seed money they are awarded to undertake a specific project in their neighborhood. We look forward to seeing what our creative young girls will put to action! Please visit http://alphagirlvalues.org/home.html.

Special thanks to Morgan Stanley’s Global Infrastructure Solutions, sponsor of The Alpha Girls project.

Deliver NOW
In September 2008, our girls participated in the “Deliver NOW” campaign kickoff event, where they advocated for safe and healthy birthing conditions for women around the world.

Hosting—and Connecting With—Young Indonesian Women
Delightful personal connections and discoveries occurred in August 2008, when a group of young women from Indonesia, all with writing and journalism backgrounds, came to the United States. Here for a cultural and educational vacation, the girls enjoyed a visit with Girls Inc. of New York City that was arranged by the U.S. State Department. As the girls from both countries chatted and shared their experiences, they realized that there isn’t much difference in the issues facing girls in other parts of the world.

We were surprised—and delighted—to see that our Indonesian visitors loved our Bill of Rights! They never realized that what we call the “Girls Inc. Bill of Rights” is a must for all girls everywhere. Our visitors also felt it was essential to have a place where being a girl was celebrated. Excited and inspired, the young women left with plans to bring programs to girls in their hometowns!
